Arnold Salo

1934-2018

Arnold W. Salo was born September 25, 1934 in Deer Creek Township, Minnesota to Reino and Hilma (Jaaska) Salo. He grew up and attended school in New York Mills, graduating with the Class of 1953.

After graduation, Arnold sailed in the Great Lakes for two seasons before joined the United States Army, serving in Fairbanks, Alaska. He then sailed one more season in the Great Lakes before returning to Deer Creek Township, where he farmed for over 35 years.

Arnold enjoyed farming and was very creative by re-crafting old machinery and wood carving.

On Thursday, December 27, 2018, Arnold entered eternal rest at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Preceded in death by his parents, Reino and Hilma; and brother Erwin.

Lovingly remembered by his sister, Elaine (Bob) Olijnek of Ramsey; niece and nephews: Andrea (Tom) Scheuzger of Hudson, Wisconsin, Lance (Carolyn) Olijnek of Lakeville, Paul (Joannie) Salo of Fargo, North Dakota, Dan (Kim) Salo of Eden Valley, and David (Laurie) Salo of Litchfield; numerous other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held for Arnold on Saturday, January 5 at 11 a.m. at Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Pastor Nicholas Kandoll will officiate. Pallbearers are Lance Olijnek, Brad Olijnek, Dan Salo, Eli Salo, David Salo and William Steinbach. Arnold will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery, rural New York Mills.
