She was born December 7, 1919 to Peter and Hilda (Laitinen) Sarkela in Meadow Township, Wadena County.

She married Chester Mattson August 7, 1954 and made their home in Sebeka raising their children Michael, Dale, Richard, and Kathryn. Mayme was a caring stay-at-home mother who was there for them every day. She was a great baker. She and Chester cooked a special Sunday dinner each week for all the families. The combination of her baking and Chester’s cooking skills made for great meals and memories over the years. She made a different pie each week. At Christmas time she enjoyed sharing her Aunt Sally cookies and Prune Tarts. She enjoyed making quilts, mittens, and scarves for her family.
She moved to Woodside Assisted Living in Menahga in 2005 and resided there until 2015. She moved to Green Pine Acres Nursing Home at that time. She enjoyed a very active life at both places playing games with her friends. She enjoyed people and quickly became your friend. She had a great sense of humor and could get anyone to laugh. She enjoyed the staff at both facilities very much.
