Nellie Heern

1927 – 2019

The funeral service for Nellie Heern of Wadena, was held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the Johnson-Schuller Chapel with Pastor Joyce Tollefson-Capp presiding. At the age of 91, Nellie entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Providence Villa in Sebeka.

On June 5, 1927, Nellie Viola was born on the Skaro farm in North Germany Township to Carl “Edward” and Anna Sophia (Johnson) Skaro. Nellie attended Hillview Country School District #23, while living on the Skaro farm.

Nellie was united in marriage to Martin Heern on June 5, 1948 in Wadena. They farmed for many years near Oylen before moving to Wadena. She worked at the bakery and the turkey farm before retiring. Martin passed away March 26, 1998.

She loved woodworking and made many works of art with her scroll saw. The designs were intricate and the blades were fine like hair. She gave many of her creations as gifts over the years and they will be forever treasured. Nellie looked forward to deer hunting every fall; she got her last deer at the age of 89. She was a good shot and got over 50 deer during her lifetime. Her final hunt was last fall at the age of 91!

She is preceded in death by her husband, Martin; parents, Carl and Anna; siblings: Doris (Harold) Broker, Birdie (Ralph) Heern, Shirley Skaro, Pearl (Donald) Westby, William (Geraldine) Skaro; niece, Karen Broker; nephews, Douglas and Darwin Heern; nephews-in-law, Gregg Marquardt and Jerome Ament; and niece-in-law, Laurie Skaro.

Nellie is survived by her nieces: Wanda Marquardt, Donna (Duane) Trana, Margaret Ament, Bernice (Thomas) Pickar, Judy Westby, Linda Westby; nephews: Kenneth (Judy) Broker, Chad (Jennifer) Broker, Allen (Bernice) Skaro, Ray (Gail) Skaro, Steven Skaro; cats, Mitzi and Murphy, along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were Judy Westby, Linda Westby, Bernice Pickar, Donna Trana, Wanda Marquardt, Barbara Lehmkuhl and Teresa Erickson.

Pallbearers were Margaret Ament, Kenneth Broker, Chad Broker, Allen Skaro, Steven Skaro, and Brian Ament.
Burial at Wadena Cemetery, Wadena.
