Norman Demmon
1930-2019
Norman Clyde Demmon, age 89, a lifetime Nevis area resident, peacefully passed into eternal glory on Monday evening, September 30, 2019, at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, Minnesota.
Norman was born on April 21, 1930, in Bertha, to Roland and Leora (Brown) Demmon. When he was one year of age, his family moved to Nevis where he attended public school and grew into manhood. As a young man, Norman worked for Pine Beach Farms near Nevis. He enjoyed the hard, physical fieldwork and other general farm labor his strong body performed over the 13 years he devoted there. In 1960, Norman began a 22-year career with Northern States Industries building wooden boxes and birdhouses until his retirement in 1962.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Wilma Kangas on June 14, 1969, at the Park Rapids Assembly of God Church. Norman and Ruth made their home in Nevis together for the rest of their lives. Later in their retirements, they enjoyed spending several winters in the warmth of Texas and Mexico. Norman enjoyed working in his garden each year raising vegetables into abundance which they would preserve to enjoy all year long. In addition, Norman enjoyed raising plump sweet raspberries and strawberries and would invite friends and relatives to come and pick their fills – but never on Sundays! He was also mechanically inclined and was very skilled at repairing and tuning lawn mowers for others. Norman was a man of faith and prayer. He loved attending his church and having devotions daily with his wife. He was a long-time member of the Assembly of God Church in Park Rapids. Each summer he and Ruthie enjoyed spending part of their summer at the Strawberry Lake Bible Camp north of Detroit Lakes and the Lake Geneva Bible Camp near Alexandria. Above all, Norman will be remembered as a remarkable brother, uncle, and friend who was a gentle giant of a man always kind, honest and good-natured.
Norman will be lovingly remembered by his two brothers: Raymond (Margaret) Demmon, and Robert (Shirley) Demmon all of Nevis; as well as a number of dearly loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruthie in 2010 and his sister, Lois Cross in 2018.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Assembly of God Church in Park Rapids with the Rev. Timothy Wilson and Rev. Art Wood officiating. His casket bearers will be Janett Knutson, Jayson Knutson, Kathleen Schwartz, David Rowe, Jeremy Goebel, James Kangas, and Jon Kangas. Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery of Park Rapids next to his wife. Visitation will begin at the church one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will be hosted by the church family for all.
