Calvin Moe 1937 – 2023
Calvin (Cal) Arthur Moe passed away peacefully at Crystal Brook Senior Living, February 28, 2023 at the age of 85.
One of two children, Cal was born July 15, 1937 to Olvin Julius and Grace Sweet Moe in Waukon, Iowa. He had an excellent upbringing in Iowa and was taught the importance of hard work, common sense, education, community, the love of family and God. Upon graduation from Waukon High School in 1955, he went to Iowa State University and graduated in 1959 with a degree in science education.
In December of 1959 he was united in marriage to Sheila Marie Grant in Ames, Iowa. In June of 1960 he entered the Signal Corp of the Army. After 7 1/2 years in the reserves he was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant.
After teaching in Burlington, Iowa, they moved to Postville, Iowa and over eleven years established a home and family. In Postville he taught high school physics, chemistry, general science and built their first home himself as he was not afraid to try anything! This is also where his three children were born and where he was elected to the City Council.
Ready for a career change, they purchased Two Inlets Resort in 1973 and moved the whole family north to Park Rapids, Minnesota. This change was very appealing to Cal, and also a good fit. He had the ability to fix just about anything with his carpentry and woodworking skills, mechanical skills, strong work ethic, careful attention to detail, basic business sense, love of people and numerous progressive ideas. He was excited to be self-employed. He and Sheila were continually improving the resort. Cal built five cabins and remodeled another six cabins. They operated it for 24 years before selling it in 1997. He served on the Two Inlets Township Board, was an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church and the Community of Minnesota Resorts, sang in church choirs for 65 years, and sang with the barbershop chorus. He especially enjoyed his volunteer work at Northern Pines Church Camp where he helped wherever needed. After selling the resort they lived on 5th Crow Wing Lake and Lake Belle Taine.
Cal loved everything that nature had to offer – fishing, hunting, hiking and just quietly enjoying God’s creation. He especially enjoyed camping with his grandkids and teaching them all about the beauty of nature. Throughout his life, he shared his love of construction, woodworking, plumbing, and tree management with his friends, family and various charities.
Cal is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sheila; son David (Lisa) Moe of Sarasota, Florida; daughter Jennifer (Bob) Bateman of Park Rapids, and son Gordon (Charlette) Moe of Moorhead; eight: Andrew Moe of Crystal, Grant Moe of Moorhead, William Moe of Wahpeton, North Dakota, Grace (Andrew) Ulven of Helena, Montana, Calvin Bateman of Golden Valley, Jack (Megan) Bateman of Minneapolis, Gavin (Danyel) Moe of Fargo, North Dakota and Garner Moe of Moorhead.
Cal was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Janice Clikeman, nephew Paul Clikeman and niece Sheila Schuster.
