Beloved spouse, father, pop and friend, David Scott McCurnin (77) set sail on his eternal booze cruise on September 10, 2023. Dave was born to David and Isabelle McCurnin on September 25, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, IA and later moved to Des Moines, IA.
Dave served bravely in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Upon his return to the States, he graduated from Washburn University in Topeka, KS.
Dave fell in love with Nevis, MN and Belle Taine, with his early visits starting in 1973. He later purchased his own cabin in 1985 and the rest is history. Dave considered Nevis as his home and was committed to preserving Nevis and Lake Belle Taine. He was elected Mayor of Nevis in 2008 where his contributions included water conservation, raising money for the community through the Annual Nevis Pig Races and water ski shows. He also created the public access sign on Lake Belle Taine. At any moment, he could be found trying to catch the elusive muskie, hosting Kentucky Derby parties, or smoking his award-winning ribs. He loved his booze cruises on the pontoon with his captain’s hat on, blasting the oldies on the radio and teaching the grand kids to drive the boat.
Dave’s love of history or “old crap” led him on family travels to England, Ireland, France, Italy and beyond. Many of these treasures could be found in his beloved downstairs bar in which he made many memories over drinks with family and friends.
Dave’s legacy continues through novelties such as Betty Ford cups, mini hands, memorable t-shirts and Touchdown Jesus which brought him great luck at multiple meat raffles and bingo nights.
Dave is survived by his wife, Sally Yates, and children, Justin (Stacey), Misha, Travis (Sharon), Caressa Trapp (Thomas), Spencer (Erica), his stepdaughter Shannon Lynch, his grandchildren Tyler, Rex, Reagan, Kate, Ben, Maxwell, Jameson, Graham and Maeve, and his brother Thomas.
