Bernice Matson 1950 – 2024

Bernice Linda Matson, age 73 of Wadena, MN passed away Monday, January 1, 2024, at Fair Oaks Lodge, Wadena, MN.
Bernice was born to Edward and Florence (Kettunen) Matson on December 30, 1950, in Park Rapids, MN. Bernice was baptized and confirmed in the Apostolic Lutheran Faith. She attended school in Sebeka and attended the Brainerd Vocational Technical Institute and received her certification as a Food Service Worker on January 31, 1975.
Bernice enjoyed fishing, swimming, and working on numerous crafts. She always loved the time she spent at summer camp. She loved visiting with family and friends and enjoyed her coffee. Bernice learned the Finnish Language before she learned English and was known for her Finn-glish up until she passed away. She would throw in a word or two of Finnish whenever speaking with someone.
Bernice lived at Humphrey Manor for several years, also a number of the group homes in Wadena before becoming a resident at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena. Bernice also enjoyed hearing God’s Word, attending church until she was no longer mobile. Everyone loved her kindness, infectious laughter, and sweet smile. She will be dearly missed by everyone that knew her.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Florence; four sisters: Lillian, Irene, Virginia and Beverly; five brothers: Raymond, Marvin, Alben, Leslie, and Clyde; and a great-nephew Jacob Haataja; also numerous aunts and uncles, and cousins.
Bernice is survived by sister Carol Haataja; brothers: Lester (Helen) Mattson, and Clarence Matson; one aunt Lorraine Macho; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins too numerous to mention.
Pastor Brian Malvag officiated the service on January 8, 2024 at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Wadena. Pianist was Gwen Anderson; pallbearers were Clarence Jr., Angel Matson, Virgil Haataja, Cheslie Haataja, Andrew Haataja and Steve Ruther. Bernice was laid to rest at Menahga City Cemetery, Menahga, MN.
